This issue brief presents academic employment characteristics of the recent science and engineering doctorate holders based on the 1997 Survey of Doctorate Recipients data. Although a sizable majority of the recent S&E; doctorate holders started graduate school planning for academic employment, less than half actually accept academic employment in the first years after receiving their doctoral degree.
