The revisions below were made after the full publication was printed.

May 2003

The Source Data for Figure 4-1 "National R&D funding, by source: 1953-2000" was mislabeled. The data that was labeled "Billions of current dollars" should have been labeled "Billions of constant 1996 dollars," and vice versa. The corrected table is available in excel format through the Source Data link on the Figure 4-1 web page.

In appendix table 4-21 "R&D expenditures by state, performing sector, and source of funds: 1999" in Volume 2, data for Tennessee was omitted from the table in print and on the Science and Engineering Indicators - 2002 CD. The corrected version of the table is available in excel format on this web site at appendix table 4-21.

April 2002

In appendix table 2-26 "Earned doctoral degrees, by field and citizenship: 1986-99" in Volume 2, two datapoints are incorrect in print and on the Science and Engineering Indicators – 2002 CD. The correct numbers of total S&E degrees for U.S. citizenship are 16,246 for 1998 and 15,783 for 1999.

In appendix table 2-36 "Enrollment of foreign S&E students at French universities, by level, field, and country of origin: 1999" in Volume 2, the data in the last row in the doctoral level section, titled "Percent foreign," are incorrect in print and on the Science and Engineering Indicators–2002 CD. The correct data are available on the Web in appendix table 2-36.

In appendix table 7-10 "Correct answers to specific science literacy questions :2001" in Volume 2, the print version (including the PDF files) includes data in the row next to the heading "Attentiveness to science or technology." This row should not contain any data, it should be blank. The corrected version of the table is available in excel format on the Web at appendix table 7-10.

In Chapter 4, the bars for 1999 and 2000 in the top panel of Figure 4-18 are incorrect in print; both the shading and order of the bars are reversed. The corrected figure appears on both this website and the Science and Engineering Indicators – 2002 CD. Data in the text and in the related appendix table 4-35 are correct as printed.

In Chapter 7, Figures 7-3 and 7-19, as printed, reflect data calculated using preliminary weights. The corrected figures, using final weights, appear both on this website and the Science and Engineering Indicators – 2002 CD. Data in the text and in the related appendix tables 7-8, 7-42, 7-43 and 7-44 are correct as printed.
