Angela M. Belcher
University of Texas, Austin

Dr. Angela Belcher is a materials chemist with expertise in the fields of biomaterials, biomolecular materials, organic-inorganic interfaces and solid state chemistry. The focus of Dr. Belcher's research is understanding and using the process by which Nature makes materials in order to design novel hybrid organic-inorganic electronic and magnetic materials on new length scales. She Received her BS, and Ph.D. from The University of California Santa Barbara. Dr. Belcher joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in January of 1999. She is also a faculty member of the Texas Materials Institute, The Institute of Cellular and Molecular Biology and the Center for Nano and Molecular Science and Engineering. Her research is very interdisciplinary in nature and brings together the fields of inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and electrical engineering. The current research topics include:
1) evolutionarily selection of peptides that can bind, nucleate and control the structures and optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots 2) biomimetic synthesis of non-biological inorganic phases with novel electronic and magnetic properties directed by proteins and synthetic analogs3) synthesis and self-assembly of biological-hybrid liquid crystals and smart polymers to pattern size restricted metals and semiconductors 4) use of molecular machines and molecular motors to place and control the synthesis of nanostructures 5) design and synthesis of biocomposite materials that show exceptional strength and regularity 6) surface modification of high surface area inorganic phases applied to high surface area catalysts, biosensors and environmental remediation.

Some of Dr. Belcher's recent awards include the 2001 Wilson Award from Harvard University, 2001 Wilson Prize in Chemistry from Harvard University, 2000 Presidential Early Career Award for Science and Engineering (PECASE), 2001 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow,, 2000 Beckman Young Investigator Award, 2000 and 2001 IBM Faculty Partnership Awards, 1999 Du Pont Young Investigator Award, 1999 Army Research Office Young Investigators Award.
