State-Specific Prevalence of Cigarette Smoking Among
Adults and Cigarette Smoking in 99 Metropolitan Areas—United States, 2000

The December 14, 2001, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)
contains two reports entitled, "State-Specific Prevalence of Current
Cigarette Smoking Among Adults, and Policies and Attitudes About Secondhand
Smoke—United States, 2000," and "Cigarette Smoking in 99
Metropolitan Areas—United States, 2000." The reports indicate that
very few states and metropolitan areas are meeting national health goals for
reducing adult smoking prevalence.
