Cigarette Smoking Among Women of Reproductive
Age—United States, 1987-1992

The November 4, 1994, issue of CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contains the article, "Cigarette smoking among women of reproductive age—United States, 1987-1992." It reports that a comprehensive approach of research, outreach, education, and advocacy is needed if we are to reach our year 2000 health objective of lowering smoking among women of reproductive age to no more than 12 percent.

The study also found the following:

  • Between 1987 and 1992, the prevalence of cigarette smoking among women of reproductive age declined from 29 to 27 percent.

  • Smoking prevalence was consistently highest among women with less than a high school education.

  • A striking decline in smoking, from 20 percent in 1987 to six percent in 1992, was noted among black women aged 18-24 years.
