11th World Conference on Tobacco
or Health
August 6 - 10, 2000
For the first time in 25 years the United States will host the 11th World Conference on Tobacco
or Health, aimed at strengthening global leadership dedicated to the prevention and control of tobacco products. The conference has been set for August 6-10, 2000, in Chicago, Illinois. An estimated 3,500 health leaders and professionals concerned about tobacco use are expected to attend the conference. The last conference took place in Beijing, China, in 1997.

Brundtland, MD, MPH, and Former US Surgeon General C. Everett
Koop, MD, ScD, will serve as honorary co-chairs of the 11th World Conference on Tobacco OR Health.
The 11th World Conference on Tobacco
or Health will be officially hosted by the American Cancer Society, along with the American Medical Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Co-sponsoring the event are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, and the National Cancer Institute. The World Health Organization (WHO) and a number of other international and national health groups will serve as collaborating partners in the effort.
The conference objectives include:
- Strengthening and expanding global leadership and increasing the number of organizations and individuals engaged in the fight against tobacco.
- Promoting ideas and strategies to create societal, political, and economic change that will help reduce tobacco use and exposure throughout the world.
- Promoting the importance and strengthening the understanding of tobacco policy changes and sharing strategies to promote such change.
