CDC helps the American Cancer Society (ACS) Celebrate Its 25th "Great American Smokeout"

The Friday, November 9, 2001, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contains a note to readers announcing the 25th Anniversary of the Great American Smokeout to be observed Thursday, November 15, 2001. The MMWR also contains an article entitled "State Medicaid Coverage for Tobacco Dependence Treatments–United States, 1998 and 2000."

The American Cancer Society* (ACS) will sponsor the 25th Annual Great American Smokeout to encourage approximately 46.5 million adult smokers in the United States to quit smoking for 24 hours in the hope that they may remain forever smoke free. Last year, 19 percent of smokers participated in the Great American Smokeout and of those who participated, 4 percent were still not smoking 1-5 days later. For more information contact your local ACS office, or call 1-800-227-2345.
