Attitudes Toward Smoking Policies
in Eight
States—United States, 1993
The November 4, 1994, issue of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention's (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)
contains the article, "Attitudes toward smoking policies in eight states—United
States, 1993." The study found that support for banning smoking in restaurants
increased markedly between 1989 and 1993; support is especially strong for banning smoking
in
fast-food
restaurants that cater to youth.
The study also found the following:
- There is broad support for a total ban on the use of any tobacco product (including
cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco) at school-sponsored events.
- Most respondents believe that stronger enforcement of laws prohibiting the sale of
cigarettes to minors would be effective in keeping teenagers from smoking.
