Minors’ Access to Cigarette Vending Machines

The September 2, 1994, issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) contains the article, "Minors’ Access to Cigarette Vending Machines - Texas," which concludes that cigarette vending machines should be banned or severely restricted.

The study also found the following:

  • Vending machines are an anonymous way to purchase cigarettes and are an important source of cigarettes for youth.

  • Fifty-one percent of machines surveyed were in locations accessible to children.

  • Local ordinances restricting minors' access to vending machines have failed to prevent cigarette sales to youth.

Vending machines are an easily accessible source of cigarettes for adolescents who may be contemplating smoking or who are just beginning to smoke. Vending machines are used most by younger adolescents.
