Television

Produced By: Office on Smoking and Health

Length: 30 seconds and 60 seconds

Tagging: Clear the Air :30 -:02 tag and Clear the Air :60 -:05 tag

Target Audience: Teens and young adults. Secondary audience: policy makers and the general public.

Optimal Placement: Youth-oriented programming, especially MTV and/or other music/entertainment programs.

Language(s): English.

Strategy: To educate the public, especially youth, and policy makers about the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. The popular four-time Grammy award winning Motown recording artists Boyz II Men illustrate the negative effects of secondhand smoke on their lungs and voices.

Key Message: Secondhand smoke harms health and inhibits performance.

Description: Members of Boyz II Men are in a warehouse setting for a rehearsal. A sound engineer with a cigarette dangling from his mouth is setting up sound equipment and microphones. Cigarette butts are all over the floor, and the air is filled with smoke. The band begins to sing, but the smoke in the room affects their voices and they sound terrible. Crew members and others look in amazement as they hear the group coughing and singing off-key. The sound engineer with the cigarette looks up and the cigarette drops from his mouth. A group member asks if someone is smoking and then says "Let's clear the air." Cigarettes are extinguished, and a large fan blows the smoke away. Onlookers smile as Boyz II Men break into a song in perfect harmony. They sing the words, "I'm doing just fine" from the same titled song on their Evolution album.

Testing/Research: These spots were not tested.

Reactions: This spot has not yet been aired on a significant scale, so there is no information about audience reaction.

Notes: The concept for this spot was developed by Boyz II Men. Boyz II Men will be opening all of their U.S. concerts by showing the 60-second version of this ad before each show. Additionally, both versions of "Clear the Air" recently received Telly Awards for excellence in public service announcements.
