Tobacco Free Winter Olympics

Tobacco Free Olympics Banner Image - Featuring Rosey Fletcher & Picabo Street

The Tobacco Free Sports initiative worked with the Salt Lake City Olympic Organizers to establish the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and the Paralympic Winter Games as tobacco-free events.

Since the first Olympic Games in 1896, commercial advertisement or sponsorship of tobacco companies has never been allowed. This policy was further reinforced in 1988 when the International Olympic Committee and World Health Organization (WHO), in cooperation with the Organizing Committees of the Games, prohibited smoking in all Olympic sports venues. The 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City are also tobacco-free and promote healthy lifestyle messages targeting young people.
