Youth Tobacco Use and Exposure is a Global Problem – Press Release
Cigarette Smoking Rates Decline Among 8th, 10th, and 12th Grade Students – Monitoring the Future (National High School Senior) Survey*, December 18, 1998.
This study from the University of Michigan Survey Research Center contains 1998 smoking prevalence data for 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. Cigarette smoking prevalence among the nation's secondary students has started to turn downward. The proportion of students at all three grade levels who see smoking as dangerous has been increasing gradually since 1995, and the proportion who disapprove of smoking has risen a bit since 1996. This year, nearly 50,000 students in 422 secondary schools nationwide participated in the survey.
