MCRC Resources for Teachers

The Media Campaign Resource Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control (MCRC) and CDC's Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) offer a number of free resources to reach teen, pre-teen, and college-age audiences where they spend most of their day—in school. This page lists a number of these resources, along with ordering information.

Free Ads

Free television, radio, print and billboard ads* from the MCRC may be used in schools and colleges in various ways:

  • In daily school news broadcasts
  • In school newspapers, newsletters, hallways, classrooms
  • In communications, media production, and media literacy classes
  • On school web sites
  • In school or college health clinics for continuous viewing
  • In ESL/ESOL classes where students are learning English
  • By SWAT chapters (Students Working Against Tobacco) organized for youth and college students in some states
  • By SADD chapters (Students Against Destructive Decisions)

Note: Originally founded as Students Against Drunk Driving, this organization now focuses on promoting positive decisions that young people face in their daily lives. SADD often coordinates activities for the Great American Smokeout. Chapters are organized by state and individual school. More information about SADD is available on the Internet at www.saddonline.com.

Order the MCRC free ads on videotape or CD by contacting the MCRC at mcrc@cdc.gov or 770-488-5705 option 2.

* Note: The free print ads and billboards are available only as electronic files on CD. Schools are responsible for printing.

School Visits

Several of the people featured in testimonial ads in the MCRC are eager to visit schools and talk with students. This can be very effective at reaching young audiences when combined with a statewide media campaign featuring these individuals. In addition, a number of sports figures and other celebrities are sometimes available to present at school assemblies. Contact the MCRC at mcrc@cdc.gov or 770-488-5705 option 2 for more information.

Videos, Posters, and Other Materials

The Office on Smoking and Health offers a number of videos, posters of celebrities and athletes, and other materials that can be used in classrooms and youth groups. In addition, these materials can be used for display/exhibit at local and state conventions or meetings for teachers, counselors, and others who work with youth.

The OSH Publications Catalog also includes a variety of other useful resources, such as tips for quitting smoking, Surgeon General’s Reports and other technical information, and Spanish language materials.

Bulk orders will be handled on a case by case basis depending on quantities available. Please see instructions for bulk orders on the General Materials Order Form.
