Web Jump Icon Brown & Williamson Litigation Discovery Web Site

This Web site contains more than one million documents produced by either Brown & Williamson or the American Tobacco Company (referred to as "American") and released in Minnesota tobacco litigation and other lawsuits and proceedings.

Background on the Documents that Appear on this Web Site

Brown & Williamson maintains this site containing documents from Brown & Williamson and the entity formerly known as The American Tobacco Company.

Searching for Documents

The search engine provided allows you to perform basic searches as well as advanced searches through a query builder. Field names, e.g., document type, title, author, etc., are called property names on this site.

To search for documents:

  • Click either Brown & Williamson or American Tobacco Company, depending on which documents you wish to search.
  • Enter your search criteria in the box next to the Document Property on the search form. For a list of document names definitions, click here.

Note: Entering more than one term automatically prompts the search engine to assume the Boolean operator AND. For example, if you enter Savitt in the author field and addiction in the title field, your search results would contain only articles by Savitt with addiction in the title.

  • Click the view document image to retrieve the article. Each page must be viewed separately. Use the control buttons at the bottom of the viewfinder to move from one page to the next. To zoom in or out, rotate the image, or print, click your right mouse button for those options.
  • Click the Return to Query Results button when you have finished viewing the document.

This site also provides an advanced search:

Click switch to advanced search to see a new search tool. This option allows you to build your own search statements.

  • Click the first document property to search and enter a search term in the prompt box.
  • To choose another term, click the Boolean operator box term (AND, OR), then choose the next document property. These items will be automatically inserted as a search statement.
  • Click Search and results will appear.

Difficulties with this Web Site

The Boolean operator does not always work and using it can negate the search. The documents are not all legible and each page must be viewed separately.
