Legacy Tobacco Documents Library |
This Web site offers searching, viewing, and downloading more than 20 million documents, which relate to scientific research, manufacturing, marketing, advertising and sales of cigarettes, among other topics, generally dating from the 1950s to recent years.
As part of the Master Settlement Agreement, the industry agreed to release documents on their own Web sites, and to provide a "digital snapshot" of these sites as they existed in July 1999. These Web sites are slated to cease in 2008. Through support of the American Legacy Foundation, the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (LTDL) will maintain this data through a permanent, stable interface.
The searchable data in the LTDL is comprised of index records, one per
document, which were created by the tobacco industry. The records contain
both descriptive information about the content—title, author, date,
persons mentioned, and so forth—as well as information regarding
litigation usage, case names, and the like. The index records were
provided by the individual tobacco companies to the National Association
of Attorneys General (NAAG), and given to the University of California,
San Francisco Library to mount the Legacy Tobacco Documents Library.
Because the index records were created by different companies, different
formats of this data were provided to the LTDL. In the interest of
supporting understandable search options for users, like data fields were
"mapped" together. Detailed information on the fields and the
data they contain can be found in Search
Fields. For more help, see the help topics to the left.
The documents are indexed by many fields, such as author, title, date,
named persons, and so forth, but your search keyword(s) only display words
found in these fields. Abstracts, subject headings and full-text searching
are not supported, and even titles and authors may not always be provided.
