This Web site contains images of more than 90,000 tobacco litigation documents. No abstracts are provided on this site, and each page of a document must be viewed and printed separately.

Background on the Documents that Appear on this Web Site

During the course of civil litigation with certain State Attorneys General, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company released to plaintiffs more than six million pages of documents that were requested by the plaintiffs during pretrial discovery. R.J. Reynolds states that images of documents, as well as images of documents from other civil smoking and health cases produced since October 25, 1998, are available on this Web site.

Searching for Documents

The search engine used by RJ Reynolds allows you to search the documents using key words in a number of fields, such as document title, document number, author, and addressee.

To search for a document:

• Click New Search.

• Enter a word or phrase in the box adjacent to the field you wish to search or choose the combined text field to search all text fields for your query. You may click any field title for its description and a search example.

• Click the Search button. The entire database will be searched, and you will be presented with a list of document titles. For example, typing in addiction in the title field will retrieve 431 documents with addiction in the title.

• Click the document title to retrieve an image of the document.

A search assistant icon is located next to each field. Click this icon to see unique terms that appear at least once in this field in the database.

For example, if you click the search assistant by the author field, you will see &Ross. Click the box next to &Ross to select this term, then choose execute query. Articles co-authored by Ross appear as search results.

Difficulties with this Web Site

Viewing and printing each page of the document separately can prove cumbersome and slow. Because this site uses frames, it is recommended that you use the navigation buttons provided rather than the back button on your browser.
