Tobacco Documents Online

This private site provides an easier way to search the tobacco documents on the U.S. House Committee site. You must register as a Smokescreen user and enter a password to search this site. You can then search on Page Content, Title, Bates Number, Abstract, and by tobacco company. Excerpts from the documents are provided on the search results page. This site also allows you to search a portion of the 4B Index.

Background on the Documents that Appear on this Web Site

These documents were originally posted on the U.S. House Committee site. Smokescreen downloaded these documents and ran approximately 100,000 of them through OCR, so text searches can be performed. Smokescreen has also provided some abstracts, as well as a feature that allows the user to make electronic notes while searching the collection.

Searching for Documents

Before searching the documents, register at the bottom of the screen.

The "Smoking Howitzers" page is displayed next.

• Enter the phrase or word you wish to search on in the Search Terms box.

• Click the database you wish to search. You can choose from page content, document title, Bates Number, abstract, or document titles from the Minnesota Blue Cross Collection.

• Choose the tobacco company’s documents you wish to narrow the search by or choose ALL.

From the search results list, click open this document to the right of the document title. An image of the document is displayed and the text of the document is shown below. You may view the previous page, next page, or all pages of the document. You may add notes on this document for your own records by clicking add a note. You may also send your comments to the site administrator by clicking feedback.

Difficulties with this Web Site

This site requires the user to register and log in, but it does provide more searching features than the other sites.
