This Web site contains thousands of documents as GIF images, with abstracts, that are searchable by title, author, abstract, and date. Documents have been sorted into series and you can browse on topics such as health and medicine, public relations, and health claims. Many of these documents are only viewable on a subscription basis.

Background on the Documents that Appear on this Web Site

The UCSF Brown & Williamson Collection Web site consists of thousands of documents donated, unsolicited, to the UCSF Tobacco Control Archives in 1994. These documents consist primarily of scientific studies on the addictive nature of nicotine and other health effects of tobacco smoke. Brown & Williamson filed a suit to remove the documents from the archives but on May 25, 1995, the San Francisco Superior Court ruled that these documents should be made available for public review. Brown & Williamson appealed that decision, and on June 23, 1995, the Court of Appeals refused a temporary restraining order preventing release of the documents. On June 29, 1995, the California Supreme Court rejected the company's appeal, allowing UCSF to release the documents. The documents are dated from 1957 to 1991.

Searching for Documents

To search for documents:

• Type a term, such as addiction, in the search box. Click Start Search. If you only want to search titles, click the "titles only" box. For advanced searches, Boolean operators (AND, OR) may be used.

A list of documents will display.

• Click the title of the document you wish to view. Information about the document, including an abstract, will be displayed.
• Click the number of the document page you wish to view, located at the bottom of the screen.
• Click Return to Document List to return to search results.

Browsing Documents

To browse for documents:

• Click a topic area (i.e., Nicotine).
• Click the number next to the title of the article you wish to view.
• Click the number of the document page you wish to view, located at the bottom of the screen.

Difficulties with this Web Site

Each page of a document must be viewed and printed separately. Otherwise, this site is user friendly.
