World No-Tobacco Day Proclamation

WHEREAS, 38.7 percent of Minnesota’s high school students are current tobacco users.

WHEREAS, Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Minnesota and nationwide.

WHEREAS, An estimated 5,618 deaths in Minnesota annually are attributed to tobacco use.

WHEREAS, The World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, tobacco will become the leading cause of death and disability, killing more than 10 million people each year, thus causing more deaths worldwide than HIV, tuberculosis, maternal mortality, car accidents, suicide and homicide combined.

WHEREAS, Since1988, the World Health Organization has observed World No Tobacco Day annually on May 31st as the only global event dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promoting a tobacco-free environment.

WHEREAS, Tobacco use affects athletic performance by decreasing lung growth and lung function and increasing heart rate and blood pressure.

WHEREAS, The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2002 is Tobacco Free Sports.

WHEREAS, Governor Ventura has proclaimed May 31, 2002, as World No Tobacco Day and communities throughout Minnesota are encouraged to observe World No Tobacco day with tobacco-free sports events and recreation activities.

NOW THEREFORE, the (insert name of County Board of Commissioners or City Council) does proclaim that World No Tobacco Day on May 31, 2002, shall be observed in (insert name of County or City).
