Montgomery County, North Carolina
World No-Tobacco Day Softball Fun 2002

May, 2002

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) Softball Fun 2002 is a community-based smoke-free event targeting girls 10 to 16 years old playing or interested in softball. The goal of the project is to increase the awareness among these youth (and their caretakers) of the harmful effects of tobacco use, including its potential to inhibit their playing skills. Tobacco users will have the opportunity to meet with certified smoking cessation counselors.

Event coordinators anticipate approximately 100 girls and caretakers. The day will include several softball skill workshops and tobacco education sessions. Montgomery County Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU), of whom many play high school softball, will act as peer educators and group facilitators. Softball team members from North Carolina Universities are invited to speak on "Tobacco Use and the Game." Incentives will be awarded for participation in tobacco-education activities and games. Lunch will be provided for all participants. At the close of the event, participants will receive WNTD Softball Fun 2002 certificates of completion.
