New — GYTS Datasets
The CDC Office on Smoking and Health’s Global Tobacco Control Program would like to announce the first public data release of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS).
New — Sustaining State Funding for Tobacco Control
The Office on Smoking and Health has identified 4 strategic priority areas. One of these priorities, “Promoting Sustainable Science-Based Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs at the CDC-Recommended Levels” was established to focus on supporting states in their efforts to preserve tobacco control funding in the face of serious state budget challenges.
A study published in the June 18 issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) journal, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, reports that the rate of cigarette smoking among U.S. high school students has declined dramatically since the late 1990s and is at the lowest level since the national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was initiated in 1991.
New Surgeon General’s Report Expands List of Diseases Caused by Smoking
Forty years after the first Surgeon General’s report
on smoking — which concluded that smoking was a definite cause of three
diseases — the government’s latest report on smoking and health announced
today by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona documents that smoking
causes disease in nearly every organ of the body in both men and women.
The Health Consequences of Smoking on The Body
This interactive animation outlines the effects of smoking on the different organs of the body based on the findings of the 2004 Surgeon General's Report. It is available in Flash and HTML.
This Web site serves as an interactive component of the 2004 Surgeon General's Report: The Health Consequences of Smoking. It includes abstracts that have been cited in the report plus many additional abstracts reflecting the most recent scientific research.
