(Washington, D.C. - July 14, 2004) Thomas J. Gibson today announced that he will be stepping down as Chief of Staff effective August 7. Gibson served the Agency for three and a half years in numerous leadership roles.

“The transition to a new Administrator is complete and I am ready to spend more time with my family,” said Gibson, who made the announcement at a senior leadership retreat this morning. “It has been a privilege to serve this President, Administrators Christie Whitman and Mike Leavitt and to work side-by-side with the tremendous professionals at EPA.”

Gibson was appointed Chief of Staff to Administrator Christie Whitman on January 1, 2003. Prior to this, he served as Counselor to the Administrator and as Associate Administrator for Policy, Economics and Innovation. Gibson served as the Majority Deputy Staff Director and Counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works from 1995 to 2001 and also served in the first Bush Administration in EPA’s Office of Congressional and Legislative Affairs.

“Tom guided me through the confirmation process and led my transition to a new leadership team,” said Administrator Mike Leavitt. “The depths of his experience, command of the issues and commitment to excellence have made the Agency stronger and my service more effective. I extend my gratitude for his service to the Agency and to me personally.”

Administrator Leavitt has asked Gibson to remain with the Agency in a leadership role to assist with the launch of the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration of National Significance this summer. Mr. Gibson plans to return to the private sector this fall. A successor will be named later this month.
