EPA and Department of Energy to Sign Agreement for Research and Computing Cooperation Suzanne Ackerman, 202-564-7819 / ackerman.suzanne@epa.gov Corry Schiermeyer, 202-586-5806 / Corry.Schiermeyer@hq.doe.gov 02/17/2004 - On Wednesday, Feb. 18, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael O. Levitt and Department of Energy Secretary (DOE) Spencer Abraham will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand research and computing collaboration by the two agencies. This MOU will promote and conduct research that results in high quality products that strengthen environmental health. As part of this agreement, EPA and DOE will create a high performance computing network and share scientific resources in important evolving research areas including: computational toxicology, genomics, nanotechnology, remote sensing, bioinformatics and sustainable energy use. The MOU will further promote a “collaboratory” or virtual science laboratory without walls, in which researchers can share scientific products regardless of geographical location. EPA will also benefit from increased access to DOE’s Joint Genome Institute and Sandia National Laboratory. Who: EPA Administrator Michael O.
