Minority Health Resources

The Office of Minority Health (OMH) works collaboratively with the following academic institutions and affiliations to improve the health status of America's racial and ethnic minorities.
 
green square American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC)
AIHEC is a professional association for Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) governed by each member institution. OMH funds a cooperative agreement with AIHEC to support its mission of assisting the work of TCUs. Participating Schools
green square Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU)
HACU is committed to Hispanic higher education success in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Latin America, and Spain.  HACU is the only national educational association that represents Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).
green square Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools Inc. (HSHPS)
HSHPS supports the missions of Hispanic-serving institutions in the United States. OMH funds a cooperative agreement with HSHPS to "enhance research and capacity building" in these institutions. All medical schools and schools of public health in the United States with a minimum proportion of Hispanic students are eligible for membership. Participating Schools

Institute for College Research Development and Support
The Institute was established to help strengthen and enhance the capacity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to participate in research and related projects. Its  focus includes all minority institutions of higher education, including Hispanic-serving Institutions and TCUs.

Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS)
ILAS is the center for Latin America policy development and research at Columbia University. The Institute is housed in the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), which provides students and faculty with access to the resources of one of the major policy institutions in the world.

green square Latin American Center (LAC)
Established at UCLA in 1959, LAC provides an institutional base of support for faculty, students, and visiting scholars. Some 40 core faculty members focus their teaching and research almost exclusively on Latin America and an additional 100 scholars have a substantial interest in the region.
green square Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy
The Gastón Institute was established at the University of Massachusetts Boston through the initiative of Latino community activists and academicians in response to a need for improved understanding of Latino experiences and living conditions in Massachusetts. The institute informs policy makers about issues vital to the Commonwealth's growing Latino community and to provide this community with information and analysis necessary for effective participation in public policy development.
green square Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
MUSC improves health education and teaches healthy habits through the Partners in Wellness program. The program promotes diabetes and hypertension awareness beginning with college students and extending to communities.
green square Minority Health Professions Foundation (MHPF)
MHPF provides support for professional education, research and community service that promotes optimum health among poor and minority people. OMH funds a cooperative agreement with MHPF to "enhance professional education, research infrastructure, and community service" by engaging the collaborative resources, scholarship, and technology for minority health professional schools. green square Morehouse College/Public Health Sciences Institute (MC/PHSI)
PHSI is committed to increasing the number of minority students who pursue careers in public health. OMH funds a cooperative agreement with PHSI to "increase knowledge and skills of underrepresented minority students" through academic programs, research, and training programs for students and faculty.
green square Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center
The Prevention Center is an interdisciplinary center for research on prevention in African American and other minority communities. The Center collaborates with OMH to develop a faith-based HIV/AIDS prevention program targeting African American women.
green square National Center for Primary Care (NCPC)
NCPC is a national resource for encouraging doctors to pursue primary care careers, for making primary care practice more effective, and for supporting primary care professionals serving in underserved areas.

Pacific Biomedical Research Center (PBRC)
As part of the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, PBRC encourages and fosters research in diverse fields of biology and medicine. PBRC researchers, most of whom are also affiliated with academic departments, provide training for graduate and undergraduate students, with a special emphasis on minority research opportunities.

 

 

Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI)
As part of PBRC, the overall goal of the RCMI program is to expand the national capability for research in the health related sciences by providing grant support to predominantly minority institutions that offer the doctorate in the health professions or in a health-related science.
green square Regional Research Center for Minority Health (RRCMH)
RRCMH is a forum where scholars come to explore through research, education and service, strategies to improve the health of people of color both in the United States and abroad.

Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge (SUBR)
SUBR coordinates and publishes the HBCU Capabilities Directory, designed to enhance and strengthen capacity of HBCUs to participate in federally sponsored programs.

Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs)
The Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) Initiative was established by White House Executive Order 13021 on October 19, 1996.  Since the tribal college movement began in the late 1960s, the number of TCUs has grown to 35. All of the Tribal Colleges are members of AIHEC, a professional association governed by each member institution. TCU Member List

green square University of California Irvine Libraries - Southeast Asian Archive
The Archive collects materials relating to the resettlement of Southeast Asian refugees and immigrants in the United States (and to a lesser extent, worldwide), the boat people and land refugees, and the culture and history of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. There is a special focus on materials pertaining to Southeast Asians in Orange County and California.
