Most of CDC's staff are employed through the Federal Civil Service system. Salary is determined by the position and qualifications. Benefits include health and life insurance, vacation and sick leave, a retirement plan, and social security coverage.

Physicians, engineers, scientists, nurses, pharmacists, or other health professionals may be eligible for the PHS Commissioned Corp. The Commissioned Corps is an all-officer organization that offers base salary; free medical and dental coverage; malpractice coverage; low cost life insurance; 30 days paid vacation each year; a non-contributory retirement plan; and travel, housing and subsistence allowances.
