Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) Position

The SCEP program has replaced the intern program within the NWS and allows the government to hire students for internships. In the SCEP program, the NWS teams up with a college or university to allow students the opportunity gain valuable work experience under the guidance and direction of a university. Full-time students alternate semesters between SCEP work with the NWS and attending classes at the university. College credit may be given for work with the NWS. Scheduling and granting college credit are based on the specific requirements of the university.

To be eligible for the SCEP program, a student must be working toward a degree that would qualify them for full-time employment with the NWS upon graduation. Please see the specific requirements above. Students enrolled in the SCEP program must also meet any specific requirements the university has and have been accepted into the university program.

A position for a SCEP at LMRFC is available. At the LMRFC students will work along side and under the direction of hydrologists as they prepare river and flood forecasts, calibrate hydrologic models, and perform the many duties required to support these activities. Students participating in the SCEP program are paid at the GS-2, GS-3, GS-4, or GS-5 level based on education experience and work experience and receive annual and sick leave. Students who complete 640 hours of work in the NWS as a SCEP are eligible for appointment non-competitively to a career-conditional position within the federal government.

Students interested in such a position should contact the LMRFC webmaster.
