A Note from the NSF Chemistry Division Director to Prospective Reviewers

I would like to welcome you to this site and thank you for your interest in reviewing proposals for the Division of Chemistry. The success of the peer review process depends on the willingness of qualified reviewers to share their time and expertise generously. Peer review enables us to make wise investments in basic research and education in the chemical sciences with broad input from the chemistry community. To implement peer review, our division depends upon our reviewer community for approximately 10,000 reviews per year. We solicit these reviews from respected scientists from around the world. Their research experience and up-to-date knowledge enable them to provide helpful advice to our program officers on the merits of proposals and constructive comments to proposers that strengthen their projects. In addition to being asked to submit electronic mail reviews, we occasionally ask reviewers to serve on panels and to participate in workshops on emerging research and education themes. The National Science Foundation provides support for travel and lodging associated with such activities.

If you have received proposals to review in the past, you need not fill out this form. It is important for you to know that the National Science Foundation reserves the right to choose reviewers. While we are unable to assure you that you will be asked to review proposals, we do attempt to call upon as many qualified reviewers as possible, and we try to limit the number of requests that we make to any single individual, recognizing the many demands our reviewers have on their time.

Please invite your colleagues to consider reviewing. We welcome qualified reviewers from academic, industrial, and government employment and from other countries.

On behalf of my colleagues in the Division of Chemistry at the National Science Foundation, I thank you for your help.

Arthur B. Ellis
Director, Division of Chemistry, National Science Foundation
