Research Project: Nutritional & Environmental Management to Improve Quality & Production Efficiency of Poultry

Location: Poultry Research

Project Number: 6406-32630-002-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Feb 28, 2000
End Date: Feb 27, 2005

Objective:
Evaluate environmental treatments to enhance house environment. Develop feeding, watering, and litter management systems for broilers to improve the house envirnment to permit optimal production while reducing production costs. Develop computer controlled environmental systems for optimum environmental quality and reduce bird stress.

Approach:
Environmental conditions, physiology, and nutrition will be studied to determine their effects on performance and processing characteristics of broilers as well as reducing physiological stress and improving overall bird performance. A computer system for in situ anaemometer determination of ventilation fan output will be developed. A computer controlled system for maintaining house environmental conditions including variable rate fogging will also be developed. The effect of air velocity on sensible and latent heat loss from broilers will be determined. Management practices to block or reduce volatile forms of nitrogen, including ammonia, and mortality will be a part of an integrated house management system.
