Research Project:
Integrated Management of Fish Health by Multi-Disciplinary Approaches
Location:
Aquatic Animal Health Research
Project Number: 6420-32000-012-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: May 06, 2001
End Date: Apr 30, 2005
Objective:
1) Develop integrated aquatic animal health management systems/strategies. Emphasis will be placed on improving the basic understanding of host immunity, resistance, and susceptibility to specific diseases of fresh water and marine aquaculture species.
2) Develop an integrated approach to examining the cellular physiological mechanisms in the intestinal tract, respiratory system, and skeletal system during production diseases.
Approach:
A multi-disciplinary approach in the fields of microbiology, vaccinology, immunology, molecular biology, pathology, and applied epidemiology. Existing and new microbiological, functional proteonics, genomics and vaccine technologies will be used. Vaccine induced immune responses will be characterized as well as the effects of stress on natural and acquired immunities against fish diseases. New vaccine and rapid detection technologies will be developed and applied in integrated fish health management strategies.
