Research Project: DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT OF NATURAL PRODUCT-BASED WEED MANAGEMENT METHODS

Location: Natural Products Utilization Research

Project Number: 6408-21410-004-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: May 15, 2002
End Date: Aug 31, 2006

Objective:
To discover phytotoxins and allelochemicals for use in pest management and to provide the fundamental information on mode of action, structure-activity relationships, natural resistance mechanisms, and biosynthesis of natural phytotoxins that will be required for development of these compounds for pest management and to develop medicinal/nutraceutical crops. Also to discover, characterize, manipulate and utilize loci involved in the production of natural products.

Approach:
Conduct bioassays in collaboration with research chemists during bioassay-directed isolation of new phytotoxins. Molecular sites of action will be determined. Mechanisms of natural resistance to phytotoxins will be determined. Biosynthetic pathways of toxins from plants will be investigated. Genes controlling useful plant secondary products will be identified, cloned, and manipulated.
