Research Project: Augmentation Biological Control of Insects and Weeds

Location: Biological Control of Pests Research Unit

Project Number: 6402-22000-040-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Jan 01, 2003
End Date: Aug 31, 2005

Objective:
Develop and test technology for mass rearing, processing, packaging, distribution, and release for pest insects and potential biological control agents of insect and weed pests. Develop quality and process control criteria and technology for mass rearing systems. Conduct rearing programs in support of cooperative research programs on the efficacy of biological control agents.

Approach:
Conduct research an development activities related to mass rearing and release technology insects (pests and natural enemies) in support of research on biological control of selected pest species. Biological and behavioral factors that influence the development, oviposition and field efficacy of selected biological control agents are identified. Commercial scale automated mass rearing systems for selected insects are developed and operated. Field release and distribution systems are developed and evaluated.
