Mary Ann Horn
Program Director Mary Ann Horn studied mathematics and chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University, where she received the Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1987. From the University of Virginia, she received the Master’s of Science in 1989 and the Doctor of Philosophy in 1992-both in applied mathematics. Her studies focused on mechanics and control of partial differential equations. Professor Horn spent three years at the University of Minnesota, the first as a research fellow at the Institute for Applied Mathematics and Its Applications, the second and third as a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow in the School of Mathematics. She is currently on leave from her position as associate professor of mathematics at Vanderbilt University, where she has taught since 1995. Her current research interests range from control of elastic systems and nonlinear analysis to mathematical modeling of biological systems, including antibiotic resistance and cellular signaling. Outside of the office, she can frequently be found contra-dancing or flying a Cessna 152.
