Program Director
Geometric Analysis, Topology, and Foundations

Joanna Kania-Bartoszynska was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland, were she attended XIV High School with special program in mathematics. She received the Masters of Mathematics degree from the University of Warsaw in 1981. In 1985 she left Poland for the United States and received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991. She is currently on leave from her position as a Professor in the Mathematics Department at Boise State University.

Her research interests are in Low Dimensional Topology and concentrate on quantum topology, a rapidly developing area of mathematics that brings together ideas from physics, algebra, geometry and topology. This theory has produced a wealth of new invariants for three dimensional manifolds.
