DMS VIGRE Awards
The long-range goal of the Grants for Vertical Integration of Research
and Education in the Mathematical Sciences (VIGRE) activity of the Division
of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) is to increase the number of well-prepared
U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents who pursue careers in
the mathematical sciences. The VIGRE program is intended to help stimulate
and implement permanent positive changes in education and training within
the mathematical sciences in the U.S. The focus of the program is the
educational experience of students and postdoctoral associates. Broad
faculty commitment is necessary. Broad dissemination of VIGRE site activities,
experiences, and insights is critical to achieve a positive impact at
the national level on the mathematical sciences community. Effective mentoring
is considered crucial to successful VIGRE activities.
VIGRE provides funds to support:
- postdoctoral associate positions with enhanced opportunities for research,
- graduate research traineeships, and
- research experiences for undergraduates.
A successful VIGRE project must:
- integrate research with educational activities;
- enhance interaction among undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral
associates, and faculty members;
- broaden the educational experiences of its students and postdoctoral
associates to prepare them for a wide range of career opportunities;
and
- motivate more students to pursue an education in the mathematical
sciences.
Award size is from $400,000 to $1,000,000 per year; awards are granted
for three years, with a two year extension possible. For more information,
see the DMS VIGRE solicitation.
Beginning in Fiscal Year 2004, VIGRE is one component of the DMS activity on
Enhancing the Mathematical Sciences Workforce in the 21st Century (EMSW21).
