This announcement describes the types of eligible activities and the guidelines for submission. The purpose of this Educational Supplements activity is to establish closer links between CISE-supported research and undergraduate education, and to assist in accelerating the transfer of research results into the classroom, based on the work of existing research grants. Proposals for supplements for innovative and creative activities to improve undergraduate education are solicited. Research support is excluded. Examples of projects are: special interactive software for student use to provide insight about the goals and results of the research project, graphic visualizations of significant research results, prototype implementations of leading-edge technology, use of electronic networks in education, etc. Projects are not limited to these examples and creativity is encouraged. Any Principal or Co-Principal Investigator on an active NSF research award from a program in the CISE Directorate may submit an Educational Supplement proposal. The Foundation welcomes proposals on behalf of all qualified scientists and engineers, and strongly encourages women, minorities, and persons with disabilities to compete fully in its research and educational programs. PROPOSAL GUIDELINES AND FORMAT 1. General: General guidelines for the preparation of the proposal, information on proposal processing and general grant conditions are included in the publication Grants for Research and Education in Science and Engineering (NSF 90-77). Unless specified otherwise in this Announcement, the procedures and conditions stated in that publication will apply. 2. Procedures for Application: A request, with budget, for a supplement to an existing research award should be submitted through the institution's research administration office. The request should be in the form of a two- to four- page (double- spaced) document describing what is proposed to be done, how it relates to the research portion of the award, how it is planned to be used on campus, what significance it will have, if funded, and the means for making the results available elsewhere. For more information about the Educational Supplements, please contact the Program Director for your research grant. 3. Size and Duration of Awards: Supplements are expected to range from $4,000 to $20,000 and should coincide in duration with the underlying research award. However, the basic award may be extended, if necessary and appropriate. 4. Cost Sharing: Since these projects are directly related to the educational activities of the institution, significant cost sharing by the grantee is expected. 5. Deadline: There is not a specific deadline date, but proposals for Educational Supplements should be submitted by February 1 to assure consideration in the current Fiscal Year. 6. Submission: Two copies of the proposal for an Educational Supplement should be submitted to the Program Director for your research grant.
