Research Project: Development of Improved Shellfish Culture Practices

Location: Harry K. Dupree Stuttgart National Aqaculture Research Center

Project Number: 6225-63000-003-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Mar 13, 2003
End Date: Apr 30, 2005

Objective:
Evaluate remote sensing equipment suitable to measure nutrient movement in coastal lands used for clam culture. Validate with collected samples that the remote sensing measurements are accurate. Develop clam culture practices to improve the marine ecosystem and sustain water quality of cultured lands.

Approach:
Conduct studies to measure nutrient movement in selected clam culture areas of Florida by comparing water quality data received from both automated monitoring buoys and actual onsite water quality analysis. Test pilot scale techniques for the production of clams that are not detrimental to the environment.
