Research Project: Biologically-Based Pest Management for Field, Greenhouse, and Orchard Crops

Location: Beneficial Insects Research

Project Number: 6204-22000-017-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Jun 04, 2003
End Date: Aug 31, 2005

Objective:
Apply a multidisciplinary approach to increase knowledge of the biological and ecological interactions of key natural enemies of selected pests and their field and greenhouse crops, and integrate this new knowledge into pest management systems. Evaluate the lethal and sublethal effects of pesticides on key natural enemies.

Approach:
Predation on S. exigua and H. zea eggs will be evaluated in cotton, soybean, and sweet corn. Traps will be placed in quadrants to determine the active density of soil-dwelling arthropods for comparison with observations of predation. Data on spiderlings will be collected and analyzed to determine the ability of spiders to efficiently forage in crops such as cotton. Studies will be conducted of how spiders locate sessile prey such as lepidopteran eggs. Morphological and molecular data techniques will be examined to identify spiders feeding on eggs.
