Research Project:
CONSERVATION, EVALUATION AND GENOMIC CHARACTERIZATION OF COTTON GENETIC RESOURCES AND ASSOCIATED INFORMATION
Location:
Crop Germplasm Research
Project Number: 6202-21000-024-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Jun 21, 2003
End Date: Jun 20, 2008
Objective:
Maintain and distribute cotton germplasm seed and acquire unique accessions through plant exploration and seed exchanges. Characterize U.S. Gossypium Germplasm Collection with developed tools including DNA markers, and evaluate for agronomically important traits. Develop an integrated genetic and physical map of the cotton genome, and bridge the cotton genome with that of the model plant Arabidopsis. Maintain a public genomic database for cotton, CottonDB, contribute information to the public databases, GRIN and CottonDB, and expand bioinformatic tools.
Approach:
Germplasm viability and seeds for distribution will primarily use the Cotton Winter Nursery for seed increases. Greenhouse facilities will be used for wild perennials and rare accessions. GRIN will be used for data records and documentation of germplasm acquisitions and distributions. International agreements will be established to acquire unique germplasm from other cotton collections. Germplasm characterization will continue with phenotypic observations and with DNA molecular markers. Evaluations of agronomic traits for the day-neutral accessions will be conducted with the cooperation of collaborators to utilize their unique expertise and to accelerate the evaluation process. DNA markers will be developed with intraspecific polymorphism for germplasm characterization and to enhance the evaluation process. A core markers set will be identified as the markers and associated with the integrated genetic/physical map of cotton to be developed.
