Research Project:
Salt and Trace Elements in Irrigated Systems: Processes, Predictions and Management
Location:
Soil & Water Chemistry Research
Project Number: 5310-61000-012-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Dec 08, 2001
End Date: Dec 07, 2006
Objective:
Develop capability to represent B, Mo, Se and As adsorption-desorption as a function of solution pH, anion concentration, and competing ions. Develop generalization predictive equations and a model to represent these processes and transport in irrigated arid land soils. Develop management strategies for use of low quality waters including those with high B and reclamation strategies for high B soils. Improved ability to predict soil and drainage water composition and develop related management to minimize
Approach:
Laboratory experiments will be conducted on a set of at least 20 soils to establish generalized predictive equations for adsorption-desorption reactions as affected by solution pH, anion concentration, and presence of competing anion. Laboratory column experiments will be conducted to evaluate the predictive capability of the transport model to describe anion movement. Additional sampling will be undertaken in ongoing field projects in the Central Valley, CA to enable field evaluation of the predictive capability of the model for B and As transport. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments will be conducted to improve our prediction of the effects of solution composition on hydraulic conductivity and crop yield.
