Research Project: Decision Support Tools and Databases for Optimal Management of Chemically-Affected Soils

Location: Soil Physics & Pesticide Research

Project Number: 5310-61000-009-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Jan 09, 2002
End Date: Jan 08, 2007

Objective:
To develop advanced decision support tools and databases needed to formulate, test, and implement site-specific soil, water, and crop management practices that optimize crop production while minimizing soil and groundwater pollution by agricultural contaminants.

Approach:
(1) Develop user-friendly, modular decision support tools for predicting the movement of water and a variety of agricultural chemicals and contaminants in the subsurface. (2) Develop databases and predictive models for rapid estimation of soil-hydraulic and other parameters needed in water quality models. (3) Test alternative soil, water, and crop management practices that optimize crop yield while minimizing salt loadings to underlying or down-gradient water resources. (4) Develop a coupled surface irrigation/subsurface flow/transport model that accurately predicts infiltration, runoff, and erosion. Replacing 5310-61000-003-00D (12/01), $845,414.
