Research Project: SMALL GRAINS GENETIC RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Location: Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research

Project Number: 5366-21000-022-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Jun 18, 2003
End Date: Jun 17, 2008

Objective:
Conserve small grains genetic resources and associated information in the National Small Grains Collection (NSGC). Evaluate small grains genetic resources for stress resistance, nutritional content, agronomic merit, and other traits. Transfer technology in the form of small grains genetic resources and associated information to researchers and breeders worlwide.

Approach:
The project will primarily involve established procedures for the maintenance of NSGC germplasm accessions, with special attention to seed preparation and planting, monitoring of plant pathogens, harvest, and laboratory processing. The project will be responsible for the maintenance of an ongoing cooperative program with plant pathologists at Aberdeen and other locations to monitor NSGC accessions for seed borne and other plant pathogens. The project will either conduct or coordinate systematic evaluations for characters of importance, which are varied and numerous. The small grains Crop Germplasm Committees have previously developed lists of descriptors for evaluation and are consulted regularly for evaluation priorities. Distribution of seed samples from NSGC will continue to be made in response to requests from scientists involved in bona fide research nationally and internationally. Standard procedures for GRIN Order Processing will be followed. Distributions outside of the U.S. will follow appropriate phytosanitary requirements of the recipient country, including import permits and additional declarations. USDA-APHIS will be consulted regularly for the latest information on seed export. Seed shipments to other countries will be coordinated with the Plant Exchange Office. Noxious Weeds will be distributed under USDA-APHIS permit. Replacing 5366-21000-020-00D and 0500-00017-007-00D 06/01/2003.
