Research Project: EPIDEMIOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT OF DISEASES OF GRASSES GROWN FOR SEED

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research

Project Number: 5358-22000-031-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Mar 11, 2004
End Date: Apr 30, 2008

Objective:
Develop a biological and epidemiological understanding of pathogens limiting production of grass seed, especially Anguina, Claviceps, Epichloe, and Puccinia. Identify biological and host factors that influence resistance of grasses to Claviceps and Puccinia. Evaluate cultural and chemical control of Epichloe; develop a disease model for optimization of fungicide control of Puccinia (rust disease).

Approach:
Host and environmental factors influencing infection and development of Anguina, Claviceps, Epichloe, and Puccinia will be studied under controlled environment conditions. Influence of environmental conditions on disease spread and population dynamics will be determined under field conditions. Statistical and systems approaches will be used to model the environmental regulation of disease and population dynamics of Puccina for use in optimization (reduction) in fungicide applications for rust disease control. Previous projects: 5358-22000-022-00D (exp. 7/01). Replacing 5358-22000-027-00D (exp 03/04).
