Poetry in America: A Library of Congress Bicentennial Celebration
Event Dates: April 3 - 4, 2000
Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, Rita Dove, Louise Glück, W.S. Merwin,
Joshua Weiner and Naomi Shihab Nye gave readings of their "Favorite
Poems." Mr. Pinsky presented the first video and audio recordings from
the Favorite Poem Project, a project supported by the National Endowment
for the Arts that has documented thousands of people from all walks
of life reading their favorite poems. This event was sponsored by the
Library of Congress, the Academy of American Poets, and the Poetry Society
of America, with additional support from Borders Books.

With this lecture on "Poetry and American Memory," Mr. Pinsky
officially opened the Library's 1998-1999 poetry and literature series.
The Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry is appointed each year by the
Librarian of Congress.
