Georgian Soldiers Deploy to Iraq

The Georgian government recently announced that it would increase the number of Georgian troops in Iraq from 159 to 850 soldiers. The first 300 of those troops began deployment on Monday November 8. The Commando Battalion troops will initially to to Kuwait and then on to Iraq, where they will relieve Charlie Company of the 16th Georgian Mountain Battalion. Charlie Company will return to Georgia after serving in Iraq since April of this year. Commando Battalion will be the third detachment of Georgian soldiers to serve in Iraq (complete text)

Launch of $2.1 Million USAID-funded Street Children Project

On November 4, 2004, Save the Children launched the new United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded "Rebuilding Lives - Street Children" project at the Palace of Children in Tbilisi. Georgian Troop Deployment to Iraq

The United States warmly welcomes Georgia's decision to deploy additional troops to Iraq to provide security for the United Nations presence in Iraq. This latest deployment by Georgia will increase the total number of its troops in Iraq from 159 to 850. It underscores Georgia's commitment to partnership with the people of Iraq and their friends around the world in pursuit of peace, prosperity and democracy in Iraq. The U.S. will offer additional training to help Georgia sustain this deployment following an assessment by the U.S. European Command.

President Bush Wins Second Term; Senator Kerry Concedes

After watching returns from the key state of Ohio, Senator Kerry phoned President Bush on November 3rd to concede the race. President Bush received 51% of the popular vote and 274 electoral college votes. Senator Kerry received 48% of the popular vote and 238 electoral college votes. A minimum of 270 electoral college votes were required to win (complete text)

Americans Gather to Watch Election Returns

On November 3rd, the U.S. Embassy hosted a breakfast to watch the presidential returns. Almost 400 people stopped by to chat about the American presidential election and watch as states were declared for President Bush or Senator Kerry. Embassy staff kept an Electoral College map up to date as the morning progressed and no winner was declared, as several states were too close to call (complete text)

Physicians With Heart bring $5.4 million donation to Georgia

On Saturday, October 30th, a donation of medical supplies and medicines worth $5.4 million was delivered to Georgia by the NGO, Physicians With Heart. Physicians With Heart, a partnership of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, and Heart to Heart International, will be in Georgia for a week to deliver the medicines to hospitals and clinics throughout Georgia. The medicines were delivered by on a special plane chartered and paid for by the U.S. Department of State (complete text)

Kutaisi State University Hosts Second Annual Conference On American Studies

On October 29 Kutaisi State University organized a three-day conference on American Studies. One initiator of the conference was Professor Vakhtang Amaglobeli, former Fulbright scholar, Vice Rector and Head of the American Studies Center at KSU. Representatives from more than 6 Georgian universities were invited to the conference. Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy, Rowena Cross-Najafi attended the last day of the conference and made a presentation on the topic: " Food in American Literature." (complete text)

Georgian Soldiers Graduate from Commander's Course

On October 27, seven Georgian commanders graduated from the very first Georgian Army Infantry Company Commander's Course and will be able to train other Georgian soldiers in NATO standards of leadership. The initial seven were trained by American trainers who have taught the same course to American soldiers serving in Iraq, Macedonia, Germany and France. The seven Georgian officers who graduated from the course will now take over as trainers and share what they have learned with other Georgian commanders. Their first course will be offered to another 40 or 50 Georgian officers (complete text)
