MEPI 2005 Small Grants Competition

The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem is pleased to announce the opening of the 2005 small grants competition, funded by the U.S. Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). We are looking for innovative, small projects that contribute toward grassroots capacity building and institutional development for civil society. Palestinian civil society and private sector organizations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are invited to submit proposals that focus on the four MEPI pillars: Political Reform, Economic Reform, Education Reform, and Women’s Empowerment. U.S. Agency for International Development provides nearly $4 million -- The United States is channeling nearly $4 million through 2006 to promote the development of information and communication technology (IT) in the Palestinian Territories. ... Powell Urges Palestinians to Prepare for Gaza Disengagement
Secretary says Israeli withdrawal is part of the road map for peace -- Secretary of State Colin Powell is urging Palestinians to set aside speculation about Israel's motivations for withdrawing from 21 Gaza settlements and four West Bank settlements and to focus, instead, on preparing to assume political and security control over those areas. ... "I can't quite get the logic that says they may be doing this, they may be doing that in the West Bank; therefore, we shouldn't be supportive of, or get ready for the disengagement that's going to take place in Gaza," Powell told Egyptian television's Mohamed Elsetouhi in an October 29 interview.(complete text)


Forum for the Future
Looking towards the future, together -- In June 2004 for the G-8 Countries pledged their support to cooperate with the countries of the Broader Middle East and North Africa (BMENA) in their efforts to prmote democratic, social and economic reform. To this end, the G-8 and BMENA established the Forum for the Future -- designed to facilitate interministerial communication and support the voices of progress emanating from civil society and the business community.(complete text)
