This unit assists American citizens with passport renewals, registration of Americans living in Vietnam, obtaining U.S. reports of birth for children of American citizens born in Vietnam, voter registration, social security and veterans benefits, the provision of federal income tax forms, and provides notarial service and some emergency services.

The Embassy has received the following notice from the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

"In order to ensure security and safety for ASEM-5 that will take place in Hanoi in early October 2004, effective September 1 through October 15, 2004, Vietnamese diplomatic and consular offices abroad will temporarily with-hold the issuance of Vietnamese visas category D. This type of visa is valid 15 days only and is normally issued to foreigners entering Vietnam without invitation of any person, organization or individual. It is suggested foreigners who want to enter Vietnam contact Vietnamese organizations or individuals for assistance in securing visas in compliance with Vietnamese law."
