REGISTRATION FOR AMERICAN CITIZEN VISITORS TO TUNISIA AND NEW RESIDENTS

The U.S. Embassy encourages all U.S. citizens who are residents in, or traveling through Tunisia to register with the ACS Section. Registering creates a record at the US Embassy, which could be very helpful if you need to replace a lost, stolen or expired passport, or if we need to contact you in an emergency.

The State Department recently launched a secure online travel registration website which will allow you, as an American citizen, to record foreign trip and residence information that the Department of State can use to communicate with you and assist you in case of an emergency

You may also register in person at the consular section or by fax. Please send your fax to 216-1-71-964-360. Your fax should include the following information:

-Name
-Date and Place of Birth
-Passport number
-Place of passport issuance
-Date of passport issuance
-Local address and telephone number in Tunisia
-Intended length of stay
-Name and telephone number of person to contact in case of emergency
-A copy of the bio/photo page of your passport

In accordance with the Privacy Act, the Embassy cannot release any information about you that is not in the public domain without your written consent. Therefore, we request that you include the following statement with your fax:

"I hereby authorize the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia and the Department of State to release of information concerning my welfare and whereabouts in Tunisia to family members, friends, members of Congress, the press and the general public" (strike out any which do not apply).

Please sign and date your fax. The information you provide will be used in emergencies.

VOTING IN U.S. ELECTIONS FROM TUNISIA

Voter registration and absentee ballot information is available directly from the Federal Voting Assistance Program at their website (www.fvap.gov).

Eligibility for State and Federal elections via absentee ballot depends upon the laws and regulations of your last state of legal residence in the United States. The absentee voting process is designed to permit citizens who will be away from their local polling places on Election Day to vote by mail. Absentee voters should request their ballots at least 60 days before the election. The Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) is a “U.S. postage paid” postcard (please affix appropriate postage when mailing from France) printed and distributed by the federal government for use by absentee voters. The FPCA serves as a simultaneous registration form and application for an absentee ballot. However, the extent and manner of its use are controlled by state law and sometimes by local procedure.

You can vote by absentee ballot, even if you were never registered to vote, from your last "state of legal residence." For voting purposes this is the state where you last resided immediately prior to your departure from the United States. If you never resided in the United States, you may register and vote in the last state that your parents, or grandparents, resided in before your birth. Twelve states have specific rules that permit foreign-born American citizens who have never resided in the U.S. to use their parents’ state of voting residence: Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin. For other states, please send your Federal Postcard Application to the appropriate local board of elections since the state determines your eligibility.

You may register to vote by absentee ballot using the Federal Voting Assistance Program’s online service at (www.fvap.gov) Please follow the specific instructions for state-by-state acceptance of online registrations.

You may also request the FPCA or obtain additional information by contacting the U.S. Embassy in Tunis and asking for the American Citizen Services.

At American Citizen Services, we take voting assistance very seriously. If you or anyone you know is having an event to register voters or encourage voting, please let us know. We will help in any way we can. You may also obtain guidance directly from the Federal Voting Assistance Program at their website (www.fvap.gov)
