EPA Orders Four Municipalities
to Remove Illicit Discharges into the Charles River
November 9, 2004
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today
ordered four municipalities along the Charles River
to remove illicit pipes discharging raw sewage into
the Charles River. Watertown, Brookline, Newton and
Waltham have been ordered to conduct comprehensive
investigations and to remove pipes that discharge
combined sewer and storm water into the Charles.

Grants Promoting Healthy
Communities Given in New England
October 29, 2004
The grants, awarded by EPA's
New England office through the Healthy Communities Grant
Program, were among 23 selected in New England. The programs
getting these funds all aim to support a goal of creating
healthy, livable and safe communities.

EPA to Begin Cleanup at Carvill
Combing Company Site in Plainfield, CT
October
25, 2004
EPA will begin a cleanup this week at the Carvill
Combing Co. site at 63 Brunswick Ave. in Plainfield, CT. EPA estimates
the total contract cost of cleanup to be $960,000. The abandoned
two-story mill is a former textile mill which was abandoned in
the late 1970s. The site is contaminated with asbestos. EPA will
remove asbestos-contaminated material from the building which is
in a state of disrepair.

Groups in East Boston and Worcester
Receive $50,000 in Environmental Justice Grants
October 21, 2004
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
announced today it has awarded two grants totaling
$50,000 for projects promoting environmental justice
in Massachusetts. The grants were awarded to organizations
in Worcester and Boston.
