In 1980, the U.S. Congress established the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, & Liability Act (CERCLA), better known as Superfund. Superfund provides the guidelines for locating, investigating, and cleaning up the worst hazardous waste sites across the nation, thereby providing long-term protection of human health and the environment. See EPA's National Superfund Website for more information.
