Grain Marketing and Production Research Center

The Grain Marketing and Production Research Center's mission is to solve problems relating to the conservation, production, harvesting, storage, marketing, and utilization of grain. Research emphasizes maximizing nutritional value, consumer acceptance, and end-use performance while conserving resources and maintaining overall quality during handling, conditioning, and storage. Major research concerns wheat, sorghum, and corn; other investigations include rice, barley, oats, soybeans, and triticale.

Research is conducted in cooperation with Kansas State University, and an extramural program is conducted in cooperation with several universities, industries, and scientific institutes.

Located in Manhattan, Kansas, the Center is administered by the Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture. The Center is composed of the U.S. Grain Marketing Research Laboratory, of which there are three research units: Grain Quality and Structure, Engineering, and Biological. The Plant Science and Entomology, and Wind Erosion research units are located on the KSU campus. A focal point for grain marketing research, the Center is located in the heart of the Great Plains, which includes 13 states that produce more than two-thirds of all U.S. wheat, corn, and soybeans.

The Laboratory was completed in 1971 on a 12-acre tract of land deeded to the U.S. Department of Agricultural by the State of Kansas. Facilities include: a laboratory-office building with 56,000 square feet of floor space; a pilot plant with 18,000 square feet; a grain elevator that has a 156-foot high head-house and a grain storage capacity of approximately 50,000 bushels.
